The 2025 'Chinese Ambassador's Cup' Wushu Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, has not only showcased the prowess of young athletes but also served as a powerful symbol of cultural exchange and friendship between China and Nigeria. This three-day event, now in its seventh edition, was a vibrant display of Wushu's growing popularity in the country and its role in fostering mutual understanding and respect.
The competition, co-organized by the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and the Nigerian Wushu Kung Fu Federation, attracted over 150 athletes from Nigeria's 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The highlight of the event was the performance of 11-year-old Naima Sanusi, who won a gold medal, a trophy, and a cash prize in the Tai Chi division. Her graceful and precise movements captivated spectators, including sports officials, diplomats, students, and martial arts enthusiasts.
'I feel very happy,' Sanusi told Xinhua after her victory. The young athlete, who has previously won several medals at the Nigerian Sports Festival and other local competitions, added, 'I want to compete in other countries. I believe that I can become a world champion.'
Other gold medalists included Justice Unanka, Goodluck Emmanuel, and Winnifred Agara, who triumphed in the Taolu Single category, the 75kg male Sanda event, and the 60kg female Sanda division, respectively.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai highlighted Wushu's growing presence in the country and its role in fostering cultural understanding.
'Wushu is more than just a physical discipline -- it is a bridge that connects people,' Yu said. 'It embodies shared values cherished by both our cultures, such as self-discipline, peace, and respect. In recent years, we have been delighted to see that Wushu has taken root and flourished here in Nigeria. From cities to villages, more and more Nigerian friends have fallen in love with Wushu.'
With Chinese Wushu, or Chinese martial arts, now featured in Nigeria's annual National Sports Festival, the National Sports Commission (NSC) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with China to promote Wushu development.
'We are quite excited. We are happy with this support,' said Shehu Dikko, chairman of the NSC. 'It is a new sport that is already gaining ground in Nigeria, and I believe that it will create another pathway for our youth to live their dreams.'
But here's where it gets controversial... While the event celebrated cultural exchange, some might argue that the focus on Wushu could potentially overshadow other Nigerian sports.
