The tragic Tirupati stampede in January served as a stark reminder of the urgent need for temple safety reforms in Andhra Pradesh. However, despite lofty plans and lengthy meetings, most of these measures remained on paper, leaving many temples vulnerable to similar incidents.
After nine lives were lost and several injured in a stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu held discussions with the Endowments Department. They proposed various crowd control strategies, such as railings, barricades, and separate entry and exit points, but these were never fully implemented across most temples.
Officials suggested deploying temple management or police officers to prevent overcrowding, especially during peak times, and avoiding waiting area gatherings. They also recommended ensuring a smooth flow at footwear counters and stopping announcements about coupon or prasad distribution to prevent sudden surges. However, these steps were not consistently followed, and officials cited challenges with implementing changes in older temples due to vaastu considerations.
The stampede at Kashibugga, which claimed the lives of eight women and a young boy, highlighted the importance of these safety measures. Temple authorities had installed railings and barricades, but the lack of separate entry and exit points, as well as the collapse of the steel railings, contributed to the tragedy.
Naidu accused the temple organizers of negligence, stating that they failed to inform the police about the event. He emphasized the need for proper arrangements and communication with authorities to prevent such incidents. Meanwhile, former minister Seediri Appalaraju claimed that the temple management had informed the police about the heavy rush, but inadequate personnel were deployed to manage the crowds.
This incident raises important questions about temple safety and the responsibility of organizers and authorities. While some progress has been made, there is still a long way to go to ensure the safety of devotees.
