Cape Verde's Historic World Cup Qualification: An Exclusive with Captain Pico Lopes (2025)

Get ready for a thrilling journey as we dive into the inspiring story of Pico Lopes and Cape Verde's remarkable World Cup qualification!

A Footballing Fairy Tale

Pico Lopes, a man on the cusp of leading Shamrock Rovers to yet another League of Ireland title, is about to embark on an even more surreal adventure. Cape Verde, the nation he proudly represents, has qualified for the World Cup for the very first time!

But here's where it gets controversial... Lopes' journey to this moment is a testament to the power of social media and a stroke of sheer luck.

Born and raised in Dublin, Lopes, with an Irish mother and Cape Verdean father, had a unique path to international football. After a stint with Bohemians and a job as a mortgage advisor, he made the leap to full-time football and hasn't looked back.

And this is the part most people miss... Lopes' international debut almost didn't happen! It was a simple LinkedIn message to then-Cape Verde manager Rui Aguas that changed everything.

"I was paranoid, cautious, but I swallowed my pride and reached out. It was the best decision I ever made," Lopes recalls.

When he joined the squad, his biggest fear was communication. Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole were foreign languages to him. But the team's warmth and support, especially those who spoke English, helped him settle in.

"The team's unity and the universal language of football brought us together. It's an incredible feeling to be part of such a diverse group," Lopes shares.

His journey hasn't been without challenges. A 533-day gap between his first two senior caps, complicated by paperwork and the pandemic, tested his patience. But with the appointment of former Cape Verde international Bubista as head coach, Lopes became a regular, earning 41 caps and featuring in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

"Bubista is more than a manager; he's a leader who unites players with a common goal - to represent Cape Verde with pride. His management skills are exceptional, and he's earned the respect of everyone," Lopes praises.

As Lopes connects more with his Cape Verdean roots, he feels a deeper sense of belonging.

"Finding out about my heritage, learning about the culture, it's been an eye-opening experience. The moment I heard Cape Verdean fans chanting my name during a World Cup qualifier, I knew I belonged. I felt Cape Verdean," he says with emotion.

Cape Verde's success in AFCON 2023, reaching the quarter-finals, has put them on the footballing map. Lopes believes this is just the beginning.

"We've attracted talented players from France and Holland who want to be part of this journey. Once you're in Cape Verde, you see the potential, the opportunities, and the passion of the people. We're not underrated; we're just unknown. Our players are spread across Europe and the world, and our manager values talent, regardless of league or country," Lopes explains.

Currently ranked 70th by FIFA, Cape Verde has proven its mettle, surpassing nations like Northern Ireland, Iceland, Ghana, and New Zealand. A crucial 1-0 win over Cameroon, ranked 52nd, put them on the brink of qualification.

"It was an incredible game, with the whole island behind us. The atmosphere was electric! We believed we could beat them, and we did. It was a historic moment," Lopes recalls with excitement.

Now, as Cape Verde prepares for its first World Cup, the nation and Lopes are dreaming big.

"It's a dream come true. For any footballer, the World Cup is the pinnacle. It's an honor to represent your country on such a grand stage. I'll cherish this moment forever!" Lopes concludes.

As we await the group stage draw on December 5, the world is about to discover the magic of Cape Verde.
