The gaming industry is a volatile world, and sometimes, the impact hits close to home. Crystal Dynamics, a renowned game developer, has just announced its third wave of layoffs this year, leaving 30 employees across various teams without jobs. This news comes as a shock to many, especially considering the studio's recent endeavors.
The developer, known for its work on the iconic Tomb Raider series, shared the unfortunate decision on LinkedIn. They stated that these layoffs are necessary to optimize the ongoing development of their flagship Tomb Raider game and future projects, adapting to the ever-changing industry landscape. But here's where it gets controversial—this is the third time in one year that Crystal Dynamics has made such a move.
The studio's partnership with Amazon Games for the next Tomb Raider installment, announced in 2022, raised high hopes. However, the road ahead seems uncertain. In August, an unspecified number of workers were let go, with the studio citing evolving business conditions and a shifting market. This followed a similar event in March, where 17 employees were laid off to align with business goals.
And this isn't the only challenge Crystal Dynamics has faced. They were also involved in the Perfect Dark reboot with The Initiative, which was ultimately canceled when The Initiative was closed as part of Microsoft's larger layoffs. This wave of redundancies affected multiple Microsoft Gaming divisions, including King, ZeniMax, Raven Software, Turn 10, and Blizzard, with Rare's Everwild also facing cancellation.
The studio expressed gratitude for the affected employees' contributions and promised support during this transition. However, with the recent restructuring at Embracer, Crystal Dynamics' parent company, resulting in 10 layoffs in September 2023, one can't help but wonder about the future of the studio and its ambitious projects.
