A recent incident at the Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University in Wardha has sparked a heated debate and brought attention to the complex dynamics between students, administration, and political ideologies. The suspension of ten students, primarily from Dalit and backward-caste communities, has raised questions about freedom of expression and the role of universities in fostering an inclusive environment.
But here's where it gets controversial: these students were suspended for allegedly chanting slogans against prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. The university claims that these slogans disrespected esteemed individuals and disrupted the academic atmosphere.
The incident occurred amidst the aftermath of the JNU student union elections, where the 'Left Unity' alliance emerged victorious, defeating the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Some students from Wardha University reportedly protested on campus, chanting slogans that the university administration deemed offensive.
Chandan Saroj, a PhD student affiliated with the All India Students Federation (AISF), highlighted the sensitivity of the ABVP towards Savarkar's ideologies. The following day, ABVP members gathered at the university's administrative building, alleging an insult to a "great man."
On November 7, the university administration issued show-cause notices to six students, four from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category and two from the Other Backward Class (OBC) category. The notice accused them of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere and fostering tension on campus.
Dhananjay, a member of the Congress student organization NSUI, denied any procession and claimed they were simply out for a stroll, chanting slogans like 'Inquilab Zindabad', 'Bhagat Singh Zindabad', and 'Jai Bhim'.
In their response, the students asserted that they did not insult any great man or raise derogatory slogans. However, the university administration remained firm, suspending these six students, along with four others, from their hostel for 14 days.
The university's directive, issued by Proctor Rakesh Kumar Mishra, barred the students from entering the hostel premises during their suspension period. Prior to this, the administration had lodged a non-cognizable report (NCR) against six students at the Ramnagar police station, seeking police intervention.
The police, however, cannot arrest anyone based on an NCR without court approval. The report indicates that the university's Board of Proctors examined CCTV footage, claiming to hear students chanting "Sorry-Sorry Savarkar, RSS's little monkey, run Narendra-run Narendra".
The suspended students, on the other hand, maintain that they chanted "Bal Narendra, Bal Narendra", a different version of the slogan.
University Registrar Qader Nawaz Khan justified the involvement of the police, citing the nature of the slogans and the disruption caused to the hostel environment. When asked about the slogan "Sorry, sorry, Savarkar", the registrar hinted at the subsequent slogan as a justification for their response.
And this is the part most people miss: the registrar emphasized that the issue was not about liking or disliking the slogan "Bhaag, Narendra, Bhaag, Narendra", but about maintaining the academic environment of the university.
Chandan Saroj highlighted the repressive climate at the university, where only certain slogans are accepted. He also mentioned the regular RSS shakhas conducted on the Wardha University campus.
When questioned about these shakhas, the registrar remained cautious, stating that he would need to verify the records. Students pointed out the influence of the Sangh parivar's ideology in nearby Nagpur, suggesting that many students face pressure and action.
