Former Omaruru Mayor Arrested for Graft: ACC Cracks Down on Corruption in Erongo (2025)

Unraveling the Web of Corruption: A Series of Arrests Rock Erongo

In a dramatic turn of events, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken swift action, targeting high-profile individuals in Erongo. This wave of arrests has sent shockwaves through the region, leaving many questioning the extent of corruption within its ranks.

The former mayor of Omaruru, Hendrina Gebhardt, finds herself at the center of this storm. Gebhardt, a prominent Swapo Party candidate for the upcoming regional elections, was arrested by the ACC on Monday afternoon. The charges against her stem from her time as mayor, where she allegedly abused her power to secure a municipal foreman position for her brother at the Omaruru town council in 2012.

But here's where it gets controversial: Gebhardt, a single mother, requested a reduction in her bail amount, which was initially set at N$10,000. The magistrate, Taaundamuje Mukumbo, granted her request, reducing it to N$8,000. This decision has sparked debates about the fairness of the justice system and the treatment of public officials accused of corruption.

And this is the part most people miss: Gebhardt's case is not an isolated incident. Earlier this week, the ACC arrested Anthony Christopher Dreyer, a former control inspector from the ministry of works in Swakopmund. Dreyer is accused of allocating a government contract worth N$84,132 to his own company, Camel Thorn Investment, without following proper procurement procedures. The contract involved servicing firefighting equipment for the ministry of fisheries and marine resources.

The ACC's statement highlighted the seriousness of Dreyer's alleged actions, as he now faces charges related to the procurement act and the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA). Despite this, he was granted bail of N$20,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for February 2026.

In another case, two senior officials from the directorate of education were arrested for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices. Natalia Guriras, the deputy director for programs and quality assurance, and Betty Somses, an administrative officer, are accused of providing false information to secure Somses' placement in a UNAM teacher training program designed for unqualified teachers. The directorate allegedly claimed that Somses worked at a non-existent school to meet the admission requirements.

The ACC charged Guriras with corruptly using her office for gratification, while Somses was charged with providing false information to a public body. Both were granted bail of N$10,000 each, and their case has been postponed to August 2026 for plea and trial.

These arrests have shed light on the intricate web of corruption within Erongo. As the ACC continues its investigations, the public awaits the outcome of these cases, hoping for justice and transparency. It raises important questions: How deep does this corruption run? Are these arrests enough to deter future misconduct? Join the discussion and share your thoughts on this unfolding story.
