From OFW to Dubai Entrepreneur: A Filipino Success Story
Imagine leaving your home country, driven by dreams of a better life, and then, against all odds, becoming a celebrated entrepreneur in a global hub. This is the inspiring reality for Marilou Lorenzo Joson, a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who is now making waves in Dubai with her furniture business, showcasing the beauty and craftsmanship of the Philippines.
Marilou's journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Originally from the Philippines, she's now the proud owner of a thriving business that highlights sustainable Filipino innovation. Her story caught the attention of none other than Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, who also serves as the country's vice president and prime minister. Marilou was among several entrepreneurs commended during the 11th edition of Design Week held in November 2025.
Marilou, a graduate of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), didn't initially envision such a path. Her primary goal was simply to showcase products made from materials sourced from her homeland. This dedication led her to represent Philippine sustainable innovation during her meeting with Her Highness Sheikha Latifa.
Her Highness Sheikha Latifa, who is also the chairperson of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (DCCA), which co-organized Design Week, shared her admiration for the entrepreneurs' "inspiring story of passion and determination, turning ideas into real achievements." She emphasized Dubai's commitment to supporting its people and their dreams, turning inspiration into tangible success.
But here's where it gets controversial... Marilou's story is not just about business; it's about the resilience of the human spirit. She shared her entrepreneurial journey alongside nine other participants, including individuals from various backgrounds such as Emirati, Lebanese, Indian, Singaporean, and Palestinian. When it was her turn to speak, Marilou proudly declared, "My name is Marilou, I am a Filipino!" This simple statement delighted Her Highness Sheikha Latifa.
And this is the part most people miss... Marilou's entrepreneurial journey began long before Dubai. As a child, she sold snacks to earn money. She continued to work hard throughout her education, even taking on multiple jobs while studying at university. This early experience taught her the value of hard work and resourcefulness.
Her first job after graduation was with the Philippine Stock Market. With her earnings, she invested in a house and lot for her parents. This highlights her deep sense of family and her drive to provide for her loved ones.
In 2005, Marilou made the move to Dubai, initially on a visit visa. She quickly found work in a high-end luxury furniture showroom, where she rose through the ranks to become a brand manager. However, after 19 years of dedicated service, the shop closed in August 2024. Despite offers of significantly higher salaries from other companies, Marilou chose to honor her commitment to her employer.
When the shop closed, Marilou seized the opportunity to launch her own venture, DMJ Ecospace Home Furniture Trading LLC. Her mission was to continue the legacy of showcasing 100% Philippine-made products, catering to the many clients who loved Filipino designs. The company recently launched Casa Filipina – The Home of Filipino Products, which opened its first 100% Filipino booth at Design Week Market Place. The project received support from Interior Design Dubai, architects, the Filipino community, and various organizations, including the Philippine Business Council (PBC), the Filipino Social Club (FilSoc), and the Tribes Creatives.
Marilou's story is a powerful reminder that with determination and a strong vision, anything is possible. It also showcases the rich talent and creativity that the Philippines has to offer.
