When we talk about the most anticipated video game releases, it's hard to ignore the impact of Yorkshire's Rockstar Leeds studio. They're the masterminds behind the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, the latest chapter in the legendary GTA series. But here's where it gets controversial: this isn't just a one-hit wonder. Yorkshire is home to a vibrant ecosystem of smaller studios and solo developers, all dreaming of creating the next big hit for PlayStation and Xbox.
A Call for Recognition
These talented creators want their voices heard. They believe the government should take a closer look at the gaming industry's potential beyond London. Yasmina Fadel, a games producer, shares her perspective from Production Park, a creative hub near South Kirkby. She emphasizes the importance of designers feeling they can build their careers in Yorkshire. "We wanted to be part of the northern games scene," she says, "because we keep hearing stories of people moving to London and then returning, feeling like Yorkshire lacks opportunities."
The Government's Role
Yasmina highlights a positive shift: the government is starting to recognize the gaming industry as the biggest entertainment sector. However, she believes the UK lags behind countries like Germany in terms of government support for the industry. This lack of support could be a missed opportunity, especially considering the growing popularity of gaming among older adults and the trend of TV and film franchises adapting games.
Destigmatizing Gaming
"I think it's becoming destigmatized," Yasmina adds. "People are becoming more educated about gaming, especially when they see big-name game titles like The Last of Us being adapted into TV series. It's becoming more mainstream, and I hope people start seeing it as a unique art form."
Promoting the Future of Gaming
Jamie Sefton from Game Republic, with his 20 years of experience, runs the largest games network in the north. He promotes the future of the games design sector in the region. Jamie believes that while gaming might not have the same cultural value as film and TV, it's gaining recognition. "We're in a generation of politicians who grew up playing games, and they understand their value."
He emphasizes the economic impact, stating, "80% of the games industry is outside London, and the north has over 20% of games companies. It's a massive wealth creator."
Educating and Inspiring
Jamie adds, "People don't realize the talent and amazing companies we have here. We need to educate people in the region, especially parents, to show them the incredible industry and careers available right here."
Government Initiatives
Earlier this year, the government announced a £30 million Video Games Growth Package to support new studios and developers. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighted this as part of a wider £380 million investment in creative industries, recognizing that "creativity has no postcode."
Retaining Talent in Yorkshire
Keeping developers in Yorkshire is a significant goal. It's already happening with games like Hogwarts Legacy, Fall Guys, Atomfall, and GTA. However, the draw of London remains strong for those entering the industry.
Coal Supper Games, a Barnsley-based studio, is a perfect example. James Carbutt and Will Todd, the duo behind the hilarious 'Thanks Goodness You're Here,' won the BAFTA for Best British Game earlier this year. Will shared his thoughts, "I think we've got a way to go before games are recognized on par with movies and TV."
Encouraging Regional Growth
Tracy Brabin, the West Yorkshire Mayor, emphasizes the One Creative North strategy, which aims to keep studios in the region. "Our creative industries have been concentrated in London and the south east for too long. This government is working to change that, giving creatives across the country a fair chance to succeed without having to leave."
